Sharon Cuneta said Mindanao will always have a special place in her heart as she considers the island as her “baby.”
Cuneta opened up about her love for Mindanao after visiting the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) Camp Darapanan in Sultan Kudarat, where she accompanied her husband and senatorial aspirant Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.
The singer-actress’ husband recently received a formal endorsement from the MILF’s political party United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) in the upcoming elections.
Aside from joining her husband, the Megastar said connecting with the communities in the MILF’s Camp Daranan was “one of the highlights in [her] life.”
“When I say I love Mindanao, I do not say it very lightly. It has been in my heart since I was little. That’s why it was so important for me to come here today and [meet the] heads of the MILF, to me, is one of the highlights of my life,” she said in a press statement.
Cuneta also shared that she wanted to “go back” to Mindanao as she considers it to be her baby.
“Kinukulit ko si (I’ve been bugging) Kiko and it’s been 20 plus years, napakarami pong problema sa Maynila at buong Pilipinas (there are a lot of problems in Manila and the Philippines). But it has always been in my heart, my baby, I would always tell him that, ‘My baby, what about my baby?,’” she said. “I have to let you know, we are all brothers and sisters, my love for you is real.”
The Megastar has been a notable figure in the senatorial campaign of Pangilinan. She has accompanied her husband in multiple campaign events around the country, and has always spoken of him being on the receiving end of “smear campaigns.”
Aside from Cuneta, her daughter Frankie recently wrote a letter to the country’s mayors in hopes of seeking support for Pangilinan’s senatorial bid.
“Our family has stood by helplessly for several years now as the smear campaigns have persisted against him. The misrepresentations of his character are as heartbreaking as they are untrue,” Frankie said.
“We understand that resources are tight, and we cannot offer much in return, but should we succeed, you now have a most assured promise that we will support your local programs and whatever else you may need in the years to come,” she continued.
