Notwithstanding India’s missile attack on a Pakistani-controlled territory, the Philippines’ Miss World bet Krishnah Gravidez has safely arrived in the Southern Indian state of Telangana.
The Baguio lass arrived in the South Asian country on Tuesday evening, May 6, the same evening that India launched precision strikes in parts of the Kashmir region controlled by neighboring Pakistan.
“Day one of many exciting days to come. [blue heart emoji],” Gravidez posted on social media on Wednesday evening, showing photos of her in a white Daniel Manila tube dress with flower appliques on the bottom portion.
She also reportedly told the Miss World Philippines Organization that she and the rest of the delegates were safe, with Telangana located about 2,500 kilometers away from the area of concern.
More than 100 delegates to the 72nd edition of the international pageant were expected to arrive in India by Tuesday, with the first official activity scheduled on Wednesday.
Several flights within the South Asian region, as well as those going to both India and Pakistan, were either canceled or rerouted because of the brewing tension between the two countries. Pakistani airspace, meanwhile, has been declared as a no-fly zone.
The Miss World Organization (MWO) announced in February that India would be hosting the longest-running international pageant for the second straight year, with Telangana as the host province.
During the launch event held three months ago, MWO Chair Julia Morley said, “[t]his collaboration is not just about hosting the Miss World Festival, it’s about empowering communities, celebrating diversity, and making a lasting impact through our shared commitment to beauty with a purpose.”
Last year, Mumbai hosted the 71st edition of the Miss World pageant attended by 112 delegates from different countries and territories around the world. Czech beauty Krystyna Pyskova won the title.
In hosting the 72nd Miss World pageant, Telangana will shine the spotlight on its traditional handlooms, arts and cuisine, promote the state as a healthcare and medical tourism hub being the “vaccine capital of the world,” and position itself as an ecotourism destination.
Gravidez is competing for the Philippines’ second Miss World victory, more than a decade since Megan Young became the first Filipino woman to bring home the crown in 2013.
The final competition show of the 72nd Miss World pageant will be held at the Hyderabad International Convention and Exhibition Center (HITEX) in the state’s capital city of Hyderabad on May 31. /ra
